Here’s a question..

Were educational computer games just a fad from the 90s that most people forgot about?  Or was it a fundamentally good idea?  Personally, I hope it is a creative direction which society has simply taken a short break from.  There is no steady genre of educational games at the present time.  There are sparse puzzle games, strategy games, or flying/driving games which are a simulated experience for some kind of real world training.  Many people claim their favorite game is a good brain exercise.  But in a perfect world, there will eventually be an genre of games which can be objectively said to be educational, and which are designed specifically to be learning experiences.  The possible variety of purposes in this category is very large, and so far very much unexplored by developers.  //Maybe educational institutions should make requests.  Maybe the proper funding sources and potential audiences do not yet exist.//

If you’ve played any video games which you feel were educational, or whose format could potentially be modified into an educational game, I invite you to say so in the comments below.  What game have you played that you could describe as a positive learning experience, or otherwise seemed good for your brain?

Maybe you haven’t cared to notice, but most new video games are very much like the bad action movies of the last four decades.  And if you don’t mind me saying so.. Action Movies Totally Blow.

As visual technology becomes more advanced, video games are inevitably coming to resemble movies.  But such resemblance/similarity does not have to show direct inspiration or copycat mimicry of ideas and styles.  Video games can easily transcend the writing styles of recent cinematography, and any failure to do so is a huge waste of time due to the fact that all video games last very much longer than movies.

Group art projects are a strange concept, because whose vision is truly fulfilled? /Maybe no one’s./ And what kind of audience will be satisfied in the end? /Maybe morons../  For aspiring artists, the video game design market the most competitive one to seek work in, requiring extensive training in graphic artistry, storyboarding, programming and software use.

The initial generation of games had imaginative design through the innovative use of unreal graphics technology.  They were artists who used what they had to create the best they could.  The new generation of games has slightly less imaginative design while relying on much more realistic graphics technology.  They are businessmen who use what they have to create whatever they think will appeal to largest group of cheap-thrill-seeking teenage men.  It really is a big business now.  The creative depth may suffer a bit for that, and it is in everyone’s interest that it not be monolithic.

Maybe this new “creative” industry will balance itself out as people find that true-to-life realism and endless violence aren’t exactly the best things to combine into a group effort for our kids.  This most time-consuming form of entertainment should have a greater standard than /cinematically/ entrancing/people with demoralizing shock value.  And maybe people will generally get bored of zombies, simple monster aliens, dutiful new-age war scenarios, and car crashes.  The simultaneous coexistence of mass desensitization and oversensitization will advance to a perplexing degree until the fracturing of previous norms of human mental habitation becomes inordinate/approaches inordinacy. /the fracturing of cultural norms is infinite/.  The overthrowing of culturally instilled norms and the subsequent proliferation of new styles will make the present culture seem like a temporarily and artificially encapsulated point which is always growing toward an infinite potential like branches of a tree in the atmosphere of mind, for better or worse.

//^^Although the more immersive quality of games makes them superior to most action movies, this trend in popular games today should run out of steam.  After people become used to the new level of realism afforded by far better graphics engines, their tolerance for crappy writing should decrease.  The breathtaking action element isn’t what needs to go away, but obviously it should seamlessly merge with creative dialogue writing, attention-holding scenario flow, and never-seen-before/innovative gameplay elements.  This is a goal of every game which is often not met.

//^^Maybe this trend is percieved to be safe for the financial success of the industry.  /And I assume these games are written by groups of people selected to be productive in a group environment which they all gravitated toward naturally../  Unfortunately, a large group of nerds writing for the largest possible audience in a world currently very heavily focused on counter-terrorism may not be the best recipe for novel gaming experiences.  The more than movies and games reflect the collective political consciousness, the less creative they become because they do not transcend the obvious.  Perhaps the precondition for the production of good immersive art is a clean collective unconscious.  If the world is falling apart for stupid reasons, and our options for escapism become equally as stupid, we may be in for an accelerated deeping of mass psychological disease, unfortunately.

Must every future game combine the mind-flattening depersonalizing alienation of the Halo Series with the taste for violence of Tarantino met with the dignified detachment of James Bond?  Science Fiction, War, and Horror are the major themes at the moment.  I’ll admit Half Life was a fun combination of each of these.  How many more do we need?

The extreme variety of fighting scenarios associated with video gaming will never disappear, because it’s a unique experience which would get you arrested or suffer irreversible consequences in real life.  On a side note, let me take a moment to say that playing sports games is mentally deranged.  You’re simulating something that you could easily be doing in real life.  You’re sitting on your ass watching a beam of light display figures on a screen getting good exercise.  Just go outside!

///As uncountably many violent games are produced in the next couple centuries, let’s hope a subgroup of bloodthirsty sleepwalkers isn’t born from a self selected taste in games with the worst of the worst violence.  An appreciation for the traditional morality instilled by real world martial arts training, as well as the artful execution of form associated with the multiplicity of styles, will not be out of place to balance out the potential proliferation of aggressive game-addicted zombie robots.

Violence is a part of the human psyche which is rightfully suppressed for the safety and health of everyone.  And it is given an outlet in the creation and participation in these games.  Some will be unhealthy outlets, and some will be relatively harmless.

////But as an endless stream of hell realms is created for people to experience, psychopaths (or people who like horror movies) will focus on the worst games.  What outrageous heights of insanity will these trends reach as society comes to focus more on the more on creating virtual experiences which would be impossible in the physical world?  It will be up to the individual to choose healthy virtual experiences.////

I think the similarity of video games to popular film styles will just be a short phase as the technologies of virtual reality develop and eclipse the soon to be outmoded art-form of the film.  The flow of consciousness represented by the movie will seem antiquated and sleep-inducing, because fully immersive interactive dream creation is the future of games.

As the era of superior graphics engines quickly transcends itself into the complete perfection of virtual reality with all the senses involved, the vast majority people will not be able to withstand hours of simulated violence anymore because to them it will feel fully real.  In the worst horror games of the future, players will wish there was a knob to turn down the realism.

Historical simulation which feels like time travel, and universe simulation which feels like Godhood.

I am personally not a fan of this “Through the Wormhole” Show.  It’s a nice window into some futurist philosophers’ minds, but its narrative lacks a necessary thorough grounding in mature philosophical meaning, and therefore lacks respectability.  For my taste, it’s much too detached from pragmatic practicality and simple human philosophical decency.  How many times do you have to suggest that reality isn’t real before people realize they’re watching too much TV?

//Hmm..  Constant violence with a static backstory which doesn’t transform enough to satisfy intelligent individuals and which follows a formula agreed upon by a large group of writers..  Good or bad for the public psyche?  //

I hope the most sedentary generation of people the world has ever know will choose games less geared toward the re-use of hollywood cinematic styles, with its empty egoic dialogue and artless violence.  Even the re-use of themes in global mythology(especially if rendered cartoonishly) is going to feel old after a while, although I appreciate its potential to inspire literacy of some kind at least.  The classic fantasy genre can inspire self-education, ironically.

Okay, maybe I’m not a movie fan.  The art form had potential.  It’ll come into its own someday.

I don’t want to focus too much on the negative, so I’m sorry to say today’s common folk love–vicariously–  -remotely-from a safe distance- choosing to resonate  –resonating with brain-rattling anger, paralyzing fear, vindictive violence, and powerful stupidity;  free of consequences other than wasting their life and clouding their mind.  They also love feeling that they are right no matter what happens, feeling secure primarily in knowing what other people know without significantly unique variation.  This is a kind of–defines the– virtual reality of the old world(traditional culture), before good authorship was acceptable and advanced mind-assisting technologies were produced.  As information flow becomes ubiquitous and a childlike global consciousness is provoked to emerge, unsolvable moral quandaries will be held in mind by those who can make no effort to solve them.  Their depth will be unspoken, or spoken momentarily and then forgotten, because lack of maturity prevented anything other than a surface-level yet viral mentioning.  The visceral gravity of global emergencies will be felt by all and have a dulling social effect as most individuals are left powerless to effect collective fates.  We may watch a movie or play a game which is vaguely reminiscent of a reality in the world, mentally isolated with zero possibility of participating in positive resolutions.  The dark momentum of global political reality and its progressively holistic revelation, along with the increasingly immersive nature of visual artworks will be mirroring each other as pseudo-symmetrical nightmares.  This will be endured by the most attentively connected young people.  For the preservation of sanity and positivity, young people will have to ignore most social realities other than the healthy drive toward economic self-creation.  Right now, the art of hyper-realistic visual immersion ain’t helpin’ the creative push toward new levels of knowledge..  which is a sad waste.  For the most part, we’re being inundated by nightmarish imagery.

For as long as there have been “movies” there have been “documentaries.”  So I don’t believe that the use of visual technology for inspirational learning should hold second place to entertainment.  There will always be “reality” TV, sitcoms, and action movies produced for the masses.  But we are in serious trouble if these silly theatrical formats take the place of the further evolution of documentaries which have the capacity to reveal larger amounts of information in a shorter amount of time than any other previous visual art form.  And even more serious trouble if they take the place of imaginatively inventive educational software which can expand the potential methods of giving lessons to young people, as well as bring the technological enhancement of creative control of skillfully mature artists into new realms.  The development of skill and the novel utilization of skill will both suffer if the more intelligent path is not taken by the creative sector of society.

Until many world-threatening trends of society are corrected as temporary mistakes, I’m afraid educational documentaries will be harbingers of doom, and end-of-the-world scenarios will proliferate along with the spread of mass socio-political concern.  (Don’t panic!)

A perfect world is just as unimaginably impossible to the previous generation as the physical existence of infinity, and the plausibility of individual free will.  But young people still have hope.  And why should old people crush it if they don’t know exactly what they’re talking about?

And what are they talking about?

A perfect world can’t be approached, or even imagined?  Infinity can’t exist, be conceived of, and shouldn’t be mentioned?  Free will can’t be realistically understood or achieved?  I think these are all realities to be discovered/worked toward by future generations, having been given up on by the present one.

There’s no reason why virtual reality shouldn’t evolve into the most potent educational tool that humanity has ever known.  This intuition was present when visual entertainment //evolved from// passive television //were turning// into interactive video games, when screens and circuitry were evolving into personal computers, and when telephone lines were turning into internet connections.  Individuals were inspired to learn simply by personally discovering these newly available//the new existence of these technologies, as well as imagining their potential future utility.  Aesthetic beauty and technical control have no place apart in the future.  All human arts, as well as all methods and purposes for imparting knowledge, have the potential to combine and synergistically culminate into a harmonious concatenation of creative wills for the next generations’ benefit in education and economic autonomy.  (If a new world virtual idealism is to be realized in the social and economic spheres.. In the near future, the multitude of specialized teaching and learning paths could intersect, conveniently assisting each other without conflict, and simultaneously becoming more autonomously self-directed, in accordance with the American high ideal of personal control of a changeable fate.  Self-tailored learning and skill-building strategies will expand into a more imaginatively explorative experience with the aid of artistic super-intelligent software and mental/visual technology.  Relatable teachers will never be obsolete, but to the degree that students are able to self-teach, is the degree to which society will realize true freedom. //

One could choose to specialize or diversify one’s skill-set in a uniquely individualized way.  Large groups of kids shouldn’t be dependent on the strictures of crowded impersonal educational environments, while feeling that they’re time is wasted having to meet demands which may be unnecessary for their personal vision of the completeness of their knowledge goals.  Aspiring learners do not want to be ruled by busy masters hired to instill a sense of duty and pass down necessarily pre-formulated sets information en masse.

There is an image of human nature being perpetuated among us which puts the will toward knowledge and learning in a very strange light, and which makes personally directionless, multi-various but rushed and cursory, unfocused long-term compulsorily-forced purposeless test-based mass-education somehow seem reasonable to old people.  Lacking autonomy like robots comes natural to fatalistic determinists who have passed the peak of their healthy years.  This is very unfortunate for human life in general.  To many of the older generation, the following of orders dutifully is synonymous with autonomy.  Most people have been engendered to feel that reading and writing is a waste of time, inadvertently and ironically by the pressure of an educational system focused on assimilation into a rushed deadline driven capitalist service economy.  The spirit of philosophical expression, the spirit of literary appreciation, and the spirit of explorative learning all die together.

Right now neurotechnology for the expansion of the duration of subjective time is being explored.  ..being entertained publically, in all seriousness, as an outrageous technique of unusual torture which would invade the subject’s brain to create an eternity of hell for the convicted person, with the logic that we wouldn’t want the person to die while we haven’t finished punishing them, not being satisfied by the expected equal and opposite suffering.  If the purpose of new mind science is to satisfy the old vengeful biblical dictum of justice, “Eye for an eye!” then I’m not sure governments are going to be trusted any more in the future than they are today.

As much as people love justifying fear, anger, and suffering.. In turning to the brightside, this wild neurotechnological idea could be used for play and learning.

Can more information and experiences be packed into this window of time dilation?  Used for education so as to not waste a person’s life(which many feel schools are doing)?  Or used for virtual reality game-playing, where one could live a whole other fantasy life in a couple hours without wasting their day?

How can well designed evergreen deeply immersive games be seamlessly merged with a real world economy so that there are multiple game-based economies which interact with real world commerce, value, and monetary exchange on an individual basis(which gives mobility to sustain oneself in multiple realities at once with the ability to exit on and enter another by choice as a function of valued social exchange?

Eventually a game so immersively attractive, beautiful and entertaining will be created, that people will want to spend more time in it than living their own lives.  If commerce merges with virtual reality in the coming centuries, there is a possibility that this won’t be simply destructive.  It is possible that there will be many virtual worlds to live in and socialize in, without sacrificing our health and humanity.  How many people will inadvertently die of their escapism before a balance is reached?  Who knows.  Maybe we’ll see in a thousand years of virtual progress.
